Last week we spent some time controlling weeds. As you can see below, even with the plastic mulch weeds can easily get out of control without some very regular maintenance.

You might wonder if it’s even necessary to control weeds in a situation like this, after all, the mulch is preventing weeds from growing on the plants and competing directly with them. However, even though competition is not all that evident, there are some important reasons to manage the weeds and not let them get out of hand.

New Transplanter

We spent a few days putting equipment together like this new waterwheel transplanter. It was quite a job – opening the box reminded me of a huge jig-saw puzzle, but we were able to get it put together and it worked like a charm. We used it to plant squash (18″ apart), cucumbers – slicers, lemon and Armenian (12″ apart) and Gold Eagle cantaloupe (12″ spacing). Continue reading New Transplanter
