2010 Fall CSA Details Announced

We have finalized the details for our fall CSA!

Thank you to our Spring Members for completing the survey – it has helped a lot in our improvements.

Our fall CSA is scheduled to begin the week of October 25, and continue through January 30th 2011. This session will have 12 weekly deliveries, with no deliveries the week of Thanksgiving or Christmas (which is why it covers a 14 week period). We will follow with 2 more 12 week sessions that will take us into the middle of July.

We will keep our prices the same as our Spring membership, at $30/week for a full share and $20/week for a half share. We have replaced the $50 deposit with a $30 membership fee which will help us pay for the boxes and allow us to purchase ice wraps and other items for delivery. The membership fee can be applied to all sessions of our 2010 – 2011 CSA if members choose to continue their membership.

We no longer have an egg option as part of our membership, but we do still have eggs! Members will be able to purchase these as needed from our website and have them included with their delivery. Our members extras store will also feature beef, dairy, local honey, mustard, relish, jelly and salsa’s available from other local farms. Items purchased from our website will be included in our members weekly share.

Space is very limited, especially for the first session. We only have room for 50 members for this session. If our continued expansion goes as planned we will be able to accept 75 members for the 2nd and 3rd sessions of our 2010-2011 CSA. We are in the process of notifying past members and those on our waiting list in the order received, so if you are on our waiting list, be looking for an email with all the details – and please return the contract as soon as possible. If you are not on our waiting list and would like to be, please fill out the form on our “Sign up for Our CSA” page. This will put you on our waiting list and you will be notified by email as soon as a slot opens up.

Also, we will be hosting a farm day on the afternoon of Sunday, October 17th. More details will be forth coming, but this will be an opportunity for our members and those on our waiting list to come out and see the farm and where your food is coming from and how it is grown.

We also have a limited number of volunteer opportunities available. Volunteers will receive a half-share of produce for their help. For more information and to apply, please look under “Employment Opportunities”

June 28th - Last Week

This week marks our last week for CSA deliveries. We want to thank each and every member for a great spring CSA and we look forward to picking up again in the fall! Just a reminder that any one returning for the fall has priority for membership.

Some of our members may have noticed our new delivery van. We had to replace Tanya’s pickup when the engine blew a head gasket and the repair bill was about 3 times the value of the truck. This new vehicle is much more economical (it gets about 25 miles/gallon) and has plenty of space for CSA boxes so we have room for a lot more deliveries this fall.

The Millican Farms CSA Delivery Van

Everyone is asking about boxes. Please put your box on the porch the following week on your delivery day. We will come around and pick them up around the same time we usually show up or if you would like, you can drop the box off at  the Brazos Valley Farmers’ Market this Saturday  July 3rd, between 8 and noon. Additionally, if you come to the market you can buy your weeks supplies of fresh local produce. Log in to brazosvalleyfarmersmarket.com for more details. We are also at the new Navasota Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings on 10th Street in downtown Navasota.

Once all  boxes have been returned (each member is accountable for 2 boxes), you will receive your $50.00 deposit back.  You can expect to receive your deposit in the mail within 14 days of last delivery.

Each member will receive a reminder email about our upcoming CSA this fall. Expect to receive an email in late September early October. Please keep checking the website as we will continue updating our activities this summer as we get ready for our expansion.

We couldn’t have done this without the support of our members – Thank you!

Mid-Week Update: Rain!

We don’t usually have time to provide a mid-week update, and I wish we didn’t have time right now.

I think this falls in the category of too much of a good thing. The 3 inches of rain last week was great since it filled up our pond and gave us enough water to finish out the season for irrigation, and it also saturated the soil. However, the rain that began early this morning and continued into the afternoon was just too much! Continue reading Mid-Week Update: Rain!
