Sustainable Practices

We are extremely mindful of the environment and our aim is to only use production practices that can be maintained with the lowest environmental impact possible. Diseases and other pests are managed using organic methods. Millican Farms will never use herbicides or other harsh chemicals when safer and more environmentally sound control measures work. In fact, we have found using beneficial insects to not only be effective, but much cheaper since you only have to do a couple of releases and the beneficals are contained inside the greenhouse where they will reproduce naturally. This means we don’t need to continue spraying chemicals week after week. We are conscious of the environment and strive to create a sustainable atmosphere for growing the highest quality, healthiest, best tasting vegetables anywhere.

We are also conscience of our carbon footprint. We are constantly striving to develop new methods to lower our dependence on fosil fuels. Heating our greenhouse has been a major concern, and we have applied for a SARE grant to develop a geothermal heating system to warm the bottom of the plant to maintain a 60 degree temperature without having to heat the whole greenhouse. Our expansion will include a rain water collection system so we can capture the water that comes off the greenhouse to feed our plants. Future plans include a windmill to pump water and solar panels to generate our own electricity. While these improvements will take time and be expensive to implement, they will will be good for our plants (rainwater is much better for our plants than the water that comes out of the faucet) and these improvements will ensure that our farm can continue to produce the healthiest vegetables in the Brazos Valley, or anywhere else for that matter.
